Geophysical investigations for stability and safety mitigation of regional crude-oil pipeline near abandoned coal mines

Abstract This study aims for the protection of a crude-oil pipeline, buried at shallow depth, against probable environmental hazard and pilferage. Both surface borehole geophysical techniques such as electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR), seismic refraction (SRT), cross-hole (CST) profiling (CSP) were used to map vulnerable zones. Data acquired using ERT, GPR SRT along pipeline length 750 m, across 4096 m (over 16 profiles ERT with separation 50 m) high-resolution imaging near-surface features. Borehole techniques, based on six CSP three CST, carried out potentially locations up depth 30 complement mapping deeper The results revealed presence voids or cavities below pipeline. A major weak zone was identified central part area extending significantly deep into subsurface.
